Virtues' new single 'DoubleThink' | REVIEW

Need a little extra something-something for your satanic ritual playlist? Last week Brissy metalcore band, Virtues, dropped this beauty called ‘DoubleThink’ and believe me when I say, it is HEAVY! This track contains all the bleghs, growls and guitar magic that any metalcore kid could dream of, and today we are gonna review it!

‘DoubleThink’ contains the elements of mid-range growling vocals mixed with pounding drums and higher tight guitar work. Just an FYI, Virtues sound like they have at least 3 guitarists, turns out it’s just 2 really heavy ones (I had to check haha). I actually really do like having some sense of lyrics underneath all the screams and I’m so glad Virtues delivers that in this track. There is a nice sense of balance in this ‘DoubleThink’. Virtues said that their new single is about...

waking up and doing your own research in order to come to your own conclusions about what really happens in our corrupt world. It portrays that you should never regurgitate the same information and that love is the only truth, secrets are the only currency

this song is truly chaotic in sound but also has lulls and breathing room between the vocals and instruments.

Imagine this song as a rollercoaster through hell, the lighter parts are the rollercoaster going up towards the surface, before getting heavier and feeling that “drop” in your chest. This song is emotional, but tough, you know just like how metal should be. I love the themes behind this single, mostly those of corruption and purity. Purity, in the sense of honesty and truthfulness, this is something so vulnerable to include in a metal song, but the insane amount of balance audibly and also in message delivery works so well, it’s tough heavy metal meets pure vulnerability.

The other huge theme evident in ‘DoubleThink’ is corruption, particularly with the lyric “Devour”, this really intensifies this concept and gives off an In Hearts Wake ‘Worldwide Suicide’ vibe. Who am I kidding, In Hearts Wake’s whole ‘Kaliyuga’ album is pretty damn inspired by corruption and chaos, and rubs shoulders perfectly with ‘DoubleThink’.

Virtues as a band sounds like a fruit salad of In Hearts Wake, The Ghost Inside and I want to say some Saviour can be heard in ‘DoubleThink’ as well. The band has been making 2020 their b*tch so far with the release of their debut EP ‘Nothing Grows’ in February, and now with the new single. ‘Nothing Grows’ and ‘DoubleThink’ both have those screaming vocals and that amazing tight guitar work. It would be interesting to see how these guys wrap up their 2020 in the Aussie metal music scene.
