I think I’m just going to have to start associating Ocean Grove with summer from now on. The makers of the Flip Phone Fantasy album are back for another sunny release (see what I did there aye? SUNNY from FPF). The Aussie nu metal band Ocean Grove continuing on with the good vibes and rays of sunshine in their electronic summer anthem CALI SUN. Let’s review the sh*t out it!!!

Instantly, Ocean Grove’s new track channels some nostalgic feels from the mid 2000’s, you know when it was a much simpler time, there was no pandemic restrictions or curfew, MTV was still hip and that grungey anti-pirating ad was constantly being played everywhere. You wouldn’t steal a car would ya? (It lowkey sounds like a challenge, but in all seriousness please don’t do illegal things like steal cars and pirate music, like C’mon is 2021 people!)
Okay back to CALI SUN,
This song reminded me of the popular mid 2000’s tracks such as the Gorillaz’ Feel Good Inc, and The Veronicas’ track Untouched. I think it’s because these songs are cool, anthemic, and have a really summery poppy vibe to it as well as a grunge essence.
CALI SUN is a very catchy tune, in fact it’s a head bopping and toe tapping must. This track is very full aurally, there’s a lot packed in there, even just emotionally. There’s a hint of an endless summer/ good time vibe, you know that feeling when you wanna just party with your mates until the sun goes down. Again, that really grunge essence from the guitars is what I believe makes this track sound so full, and it is perfectly complemented with the hypnotic bounce of the drums, which is where I feel the audience gets that good feeling party vibe from.
This would definitely be an epic summer festival tune, the lyrics in the chorus, particularly “california love”, are super simple and memorable. CALI SUN actually reminds me slightly of Loose End’s latest release Autopilot, which both have a euphoric sound and summery feel. Don’t those songs just make you want to watch the sunset on some high ass hilltop overlooking a city?
Ocean Grove have said that their new song is "Paradisiacal and enticing, 'CALI SUN' represents the ultimate marketplace for the senses whether they lust for fame, money or success. Not your stereotypical heartbreak story, 'CALI SUN' is a nod to the land and opulence of California herself”.

If you are sweet on Ocean Grove, be sure to catch them playing alongside other acts such as Karnivool, Plini and Reliqa at the Monolith Festival next year around Oz.
