Get your motor running, because Sydney based rockers Avalanche may have just released an EP that would be the perfect soundtrack to ‘Sons Of Anarchy: Down Under’ (please note: SOA: Down Under isn’t real… yet, you might want to get onto that Kurt Sutter). Second Hand Band is the name of Avalanche’s new EP which is a fusion of 80’s pub rock and biker aesthetics. It will make you want to buy a Harley, just to ride it down a deserted highway.

The EP is made up of six grunge, old school Aussie rock tracks. Avalanche’s sound is similar to Melbourne’s alternative rockers Canyon in terms of gruffness and attitude. The band describe themselves as ‘if AC/DC tripped over Wolfmother and fell down the stairs while playing Rose Tattoo they’d land as Avalanche!’, which is absolutely brilliant! And a perfect description.
Most bands at the moment are releasing music with a theme of 90’s and 00’s influence and nostalgia, I like that Avalanche have taken it a step backwards in time to the 80’s. You know, the good stuff: sex, drugs and pure rock ‘n’ roll. I don’t know Avalanche’s stand on the first two listed, but I can tell you that they have rock ‘n’ roll nailed.
Lead vocalist for Avalanche, Steven Campbell says that “with Second Hand
Band, we tried to capture our experiences as a young rock band in Australia and the way we kinda see ourselves and how others may see us in the industry; thoroughly used, gently bruised and in somewhat working order and trying to find our own voice, where all the music we play is
influenced by what we grew up on, the music in our dad’s record collection and the dirty pub rock of Australia’s past, but played through our generation”, which was 100% the impression I had and heard on the very first listen of this EP.
Okay, let’s chat about some standout tracks on the Second Hand Band EP.
Killer Instinct and Spit In My Mouth are the “biker tracks” served with a side of attitude. Killer Instinct is the first song on the EP and introduces the band’s sound really well, it sets the listener up for what you expect to hear from any Aussie rock artist. Killer Instinct has an AC/DC Highway to Hell feel about it, while Spit In My Mouth has a slightly more Foo Fighters aesthetic.
Get Back (To Fuckwit City) needs a special mention as well. I mean c’mon with a name like that, it’s has a hilarious undertone and a really relatable concept behind it. Instead of band’s saying ‘ugh OMG I hate my town’, they should just jump on the Avalanche bandwagon and say they ‘live in Fuckwit City’. Besides a really likable name, I think that this could possibly be one of the strongest singles on the EP. It is vocally powerful and I think nicely captures Avalanche’s sound as a band, you have those really present guitars and rock sound that nicely portray 80’s Aussie rock that’s been re-vamped for 2021.
If you are slightly more of a blues fan, Avalanche’s track Down In The Gutter would be your cup of tea on this EP. This track takes a slightly more dramatic twist to add some dynamic to this heavily rock inspired EP, Down In The Gutter is a song with depth and musically is features a blues style use of guitar.
In summary, Avalanche dropped their new EP on Tuesday 11th of May, if you haven't listened to it yet maybe buy a motorbike before jumping on Spotify. But you should definitely check out their sound and socials if you love a bit of pub rock!
And stay tuned for a Moody Music chat with the band coming soon.
